The Origin and Character of Islands of the World
PIF 523 4815 802
Program Date: March 11, 2008
Come and experience the many islands of the World. This two-part discussion first describes the “where, why, and how” of islands, and the second part describes Bermuda, one of the World’s most beautiful “paradise islands.”
9:00-10:15a.m.
Islands: Where Do They Come From?
Islands range in size from Greenland, the largest island, to small, unmapped islets that barely jut out of the water. They can be due to breakup of continents, or they can be volcanoes, reefs, glacial deposits, or barrier islands. All islands owe their existence to the rise and fall of sea level: they appear or enlarge as sea level drops, and they become smaller or even disappear as sea level rises.
10:30-11:45a.m.
Bermuda: A Jewel in the North Atlantic
Consisting of coral reefs and beautiful sandy beaches bathed by the warm Gulf Stream, Bermuda sits above an extinct volcano that formed 33 million years ago. Settled by the English in 1612, it is now a self-governing territory of the United Kingdom. The 65,000 inhabitants, mostly descended from slaves and European settlers, thrive on an economy of international business, financial services, and tourism.
